The dispute over the maritime borders in the Eastern Mediterranean has caused, since mid-August, very sharp diplomatic tensions between Athens and Ankara. Sinan Ülgen argues that only a diplomatic solution is possible. Athens and Ankara should seek to resolve their differences in bilateral negotiations. There may be areas where they disagree but nonetheless could agree to take their disputes to international courts. There is also one more option acknowledged in international law, which is a co-ownership option, where the goal is no longer to resolve disagreements but to lead to a joint commercial operation of the offshore resources.
